Catechism Cards

Lord's Prayer

Lord's Prayer explanation

The following PDF files are provided as a tool to teach your children the Apostle's Creed, the Lord's Prayer and the Ten Commandments. (Sound familiar? If not, listen carefully the next time you attend a baptism!) They can be downloaded, printed on A4 card paper, cut and even laminated to use in your church's Sunday School or your home.

They are designed to have the church teaching item on the front of the card with the explanation from Luther's Small Catechism on the back. (See the sample images on the right.) After cutting, each item will be A5 size.

For each set of cards you can choose one of two styles of file organisation. Option 1 has all the 'front of card' pages first followed by the 'back of card' pages – suitable for printers where you have to reload the paper to get double-siding (eg. most home printers). Option 2 alternates the 'front of card' pages with the matching 'back of card' page – suitable for printers with automatic double siding (eg. larger office printer).

The Lord's Prayer

Split into 9 parts plus an introductory part on prayer.

The Apostle's Creed

Split into 7 smaller parts plus introduction. The second and third articles of the creed will be spread across a few cards but with the article's whole explanation on the back of each card.

The Ten Commandments

10 parts plus an introductory part on the Commandments.

Learn more about the Catechism

Luther wrote the Small Catechism about 500 years ago to assist parents in their role of teaching the Christian faith to their children. His clear explanations of important Christian teachings – The Apostle’s Creed, The Lord’s Prayer, The Ten Commandments, Baptism, Holy Communion and Confession – have stood the test of time and are as relevant today as ever.

  • Martin Luther's Small Catechism is provided, almost in full, on this site using the same common contemporary translation as on the Catechism cards above.
  • Visit Australian Church Resources to order your own printed copy of Luther's Small Catechism. (Type “catechism” into the Quick Find box.)

Also available at Australian Church Resources is the 1996 translation by Mary Jo Zwar:

“This is a completely new translation, from the original German, of this classic Reformation document. It uses present-day natural idiomatic English to convey the meaning of the text clearly and vividly. It avoids terminology not in everyday use. It is particularly suitable for use by young people but can help people of all ages to gain a new appreciation for and a new understanding of the catechism.”
